I am a writer and wine buyer with nearly 20 years experience in marketing, tasting, writing about and (most importantly!) drinking wine.
I now live in the beautiful wine and food mecca of the Macedon Ranges (just outside Melbourne) but my last base was the US of A where I lived for 10 years. For a fun and frenetic few years I co-owned South food + wine bar in San Francisco with Australian chef Luke Mangan and restaurateur Anna Weinberg. Prior to owning South, I worked in the Napa Valley as Vice President of Communications and PR for the corporate owner of global wine brands like Beringer, Penfolds, Rosemount and Wolf Blass (plus lots of little cool boutiquey Californian and Aussie brands). While in California, I held several non-profit and board positions including Chairwoman of Wine Australia USA and the wine council of the California Wine Institute. I also did a wine judging course at the University of California (Davis) which introduced me to a whole lot of interesting flavours and useless wine words.
Before I lived in the land of the free, I lived in the land of sushi (and the rising sun), where I spent six years learning Japanese (very hard) and working for an international importer. While there, I also wrote a column for Japan's leading newspaper, the Mainichi Shimbun about how strange and often alienating it was to be a gaijin in Japan. I have also been quoted (in English) in numerous US publications such as Wine Spectator and Forbes. Since returning to Australia, I have judged the Le Cordon Bleu World Food Media Awards and sat on the Food and Wine Tourism Council for the State of Victoria and the board of Wine Victoria.
My mum and dad own Mandalay Road in Geographe, Western Australia. They make fantastic California style Zinfandel as well as exceptionally tasty Shiraz, Cabernet and Chardonnay.
